Average soil can support at least 1500 pounds per square foot. An engineer calculates the weight the structural element transfers to the soil. If a 1'x1' column transfers 6,000 lbs. to the ground, and the soil strength is 1500 lbs/sqft, the foundation footing should be 2'x2', or 4 sqft (4sqft x 1500lb/sqft = 6,000 lb.).

What are the fundamental requirements for building a foundation?

Load bearing capacity of the soil

What is the cause of failure of foundation of a building?

The foundation of a building may fain in shear or due to excessive settlement. if the load on the foundation is more than the bearing capacity of soil or the settlement due to the load is more than tne allowable limit than the foundation is said to fail.

Why build a house on raft instead of foundation?

Its all about the type of soil and the building structure is going to build on it. If the site soil is not the type (i.e; like clay soil, the soil cannot having load bearing capacity etc.,) for constructing big buildings, its better to go for raft foundation. Because, this type of foundation spreads the load of building to overall area and if the foundations are constructing very near by each other means. In that time also, this foundation can be laid.

What is the Purpose of foundation in building construction?

The purpose of a foundation is to distribute the load from the superstructure to the soil below so that the structure is safe and can with stand the loads - dead load, wind load, live load and seismic loads. The settlements should also be with in accepted limits.

What is trench in foundation?

For a foundation for a building, it is necessary to excavate at least below the soil zone, and further, sufficiently to enable a strong enough concrete foundation to support the intended building. Commonly, the base of the trench (the footing) will be a few times wider than the actual width of the foundation wall, so as to provide sufficient load bearing for the building.

What is foundation of a building?

Foundation is the underground or the substructure part of a building that transmits the load of the super structure to the ground safely. it is the lower part of building on which the whole structure rests. it may be made up of stone masonary, PCC or RCC. depending the width to depth ratio it may be a shallow foundation or a deep foundation. shallow foundations are used for smaller structures and shallow foundations are used for multistoried buildings where the load carried by soil is more.

What is column foundation?

It is rcc structure which carries the load of super structure to the soil.

What is wall footing?

a portion of a foundation/substructure that transmits load unto the soil/ground.

What is the difference and connection between soil mechanics and foundation engineering?

soil mechanics is the science dealing with soil to knowing ,type of soil , bearing capacity of the slackening weakness and strength of the soil and by soil mechanics can we give a recommendation to the designer Foundation engineering is design of foundation of any projects ,building ,factories ,stores ....)the design of foundation type depended on the bearing capacity of the soil of the concerned site of the project.

Is building a house on clay soil is that good or not?

Clay soil is a bad foundation. Clay is generally unstable and too much moisture could collapse the entire building.
