Fungi are also the source of many antibiotic compounds as well as medicines used to help make organ transplants sucessful. Fungi are also used in industry to produce vast quantities of compounds, such as citric acid.

There are some negative roles that fungi play as well. Fungal pathogens are responsible for the loss of crop yields and the spoilage of food. Fungi are also responsible for a few human diseases.
