Well, we have three branches: executive branch (president), legislative branch (congress), and judicial branch (court system). We have checks and balances where the branches can veto another branch's power and vice versa. That way, no one branch has more power than the other. The job of the executive branch is to enforce the laws that are passed by congress. Congress (legislative branch) is composed of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Each state has representation in both houses. In the House of Representatives, representation is based on population. In the Senate, each state has two senators. Congress' job is to make the laws. The judicial branch consists of the courts. Their job is to interpret the laws however they see fit.
