The typical hand grenade has a striker which is held in the cocked position by a lever, which is in turn held by a pin. When the pin is removed and the lever released, the striker hits a fuse which begins to burn in a confined tube. When the burning reaches the end of the tube (in several seconds), it detonates the explosive. By this point you should have throw the grenade and something you don't like and ducked.

The grenade has its name because the fragments of its cased were supposed to resemble the seeds in a pomegranate.

There are other types of grenades besides hand grenades. Most of there are small versions of rockets or artillery shells.
