It doesn't. Intelligence has no bearing on the state of anyone's mental health. It is the thinking that it does which creates the stigma still being fought by advocates of those who are in emotional pain. One might as well ask how intelligence affects physical health as it is the same question, mental/physical is not divisible, it's a complete system woven together.
Intelligence might help someone with health problems since they would be more likely than someone less so to seek answers and solutions for themselves, so whilst it has no effect on the condition perhaps a deal of it is useful if extricating oneself from the condition if it is possible to do so.
That is a complex question to answer. If you are asking how intelligence affects mental health then what we know is not enough to answer it properly. One of the things to consider is that intelligence has more to do with how the brain is wired and mental health has more to do with the chemicals that the brain uses to help it function.
Maybe an analogy would help here. Imagine that intelligence is how many wires you have in a computer and how they are all hooked up to each other and that the 'mental health' of the computer system is the condition of the wires.
If the connections are dirty, corroded, and the plastic insulation is deteriorating a crumbling causing stray electrical impulses to either stop or go the wrong way, that might be a good way of looking at it. So, you can see that even a very intelligent person, or computer, can go bad if it is not 'healthy'.

Current studies suggest that higher emotional intelligence (EI) is linked to improved psychological and physical health, and a meta-analysis further emphasizes that the link between trait EI and mental health is important (Martins et al., 2010). ... The TMMS is based on Salovey and Mayer's (1990) EI model.

Heredity can affect intelligence because of factors such as socioeconomic status of the family, intelligence of the parents, the ethnicity, gender and education. This does not imply that children who come from lower socio-economic status must necessarily have a lower intelligence, rather that it is a factor when intelligence is developing.
