During the early part of World War Two, the distance of Japan was so far from the US that the Pacific Ocean protected Japan from invasion. The Chinese had no chance to invade Japan and the USSR had an agreement not to engage in combat until the very last days before Japan's surrender.

Long answer Japan has a self defense force. it is quiet large. with over 200,000 active troops. America also has a sizable force of 35,000 troops in japan. If war broke with japan and say China, we would declare war on china and send all our troops to japan and South Korea to protect them and as foot holds to move into main land japan/south korea. Basically Japans enemies are close by but also would bring in south Korea and America into it.

Short answer

Yes, very well actually.

Japan consists of 6852 islands, making it hard for an invader to conquer territory.

In addition, the four big islands consist of mountainous territory, with the major cites being on the coast facing the Pacific (i.e. not on the coast facing Asia). To get at them, you could have to approach from the Pacific, by which time Japanese defences would have spotted your arrival and taken defensive measures.
