no land to grow crops
Relatively little of Japan's land is arable, or suitable for farming. Much of the land is too rocky or steep to grow crops on. As a result, most farms are small.Because their farms are so small and Japan imports so much of its food, many farmers cannot make a living from their crops. As a result, many people have left rural areas to find jobs in cities.
A lot of it! To be slightly more exact, over 30% of it.
Japan is a string of islands with small land mass. They could not find areas to put land for food much less people so they buy from other countries, this also explains why prices in Japan are so overpriced.
One problem is how much land we have that we can grow food on. Only 1/32 of our land we can grow food on. There for our food amount is rappidly decreasing. Since, we can't grow food most places we won't have enough food if our population keeps increasing. Also, the amount of land people are able to live on is only 1/8. We already are living on most of that land. If our population keeps increasing we will practically be living on each other's feet!

They didn't buy food they grew it or killed it. This is why they had land for the peasants to grow the food and the forest to hunt for game.
Depends on what animals you are raising, how many animals need to be fed, and what crops you are raising.
