Life as we knew it didn't really give a certain ending to the book but it gave the reader a bit of hope that everything was going to be okay. After the main family in the book had very little food supplies, Miranda goes out to the post office to see if her father's child is born as a last request to her strength. She knew she was going to die but she needed to hear if the baby was born to know that somewhere life was still going on. She also knew that her families food supply was running very low so she deiced to leave for good, knowing she would die on the journey. She doesn't tell her mom this but her older brother Matt finds out.

During her journey, which she walks in the snow, she gets to the post office to find it is closed. After realizing she walked to her death, she sulks but then finds a flier stating that the City Hall is opened on Fridays 2-4 pm. She visits the place and finds out that there are two gentlemen giving bags of food away to families every week. After she talks to them she finds out that she will receive a bag for each of her family members and because she didn't know of this happening she was also going to receive more bags that she deserved during the other weeks.

Also the electricity, that had been out for such a long time, started to come back on again sporadically which showed the reader that things were starting to look up.
