Magnesium is essential to the life of all organisms. It is found in every cell type of every organism. ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, the main source of energy in all cells, must be bonded to a magnesium ion in order to be biologically active. All cell function requiring ATP energy require magnesium to function, and require magnesium to catalyze reactions.

In plants, magnesium is necessary for synthesizing chlorophyll and for the process of photosynthesis.
