How does matter differ from volume?

matter is the exact amount of 'stuff' there is, while volume takes into account the space present in the stuff. for example, in a hydrogen atom, the matter consists of 1 proton and 1 electron only. the volume consists of 1 proton, 1 electron and all the space iside the atom that is present between the proton and electron. a gas has volume, a neutron star has matter (because the gravity is so high that all the space is squeezed out, and only pure matter remains).
