Media can cause distance in families in several ways:

1) Isolating family members from each other as they pay more attention to the TV or radio or computer etc. than they do to other family members

2) Modeling dysfunctional behaviors as if they are the norm so that family members begin to question if they are "normal" or "doing it right" if they engage in healthy interpersonal relationships

3) Belittling people who are close to their family members

4) Portraying caring about and being close to family members as somehow enslaving or suffocating the freedom of the individual.
