The connection is that the ocean floor spreading is what causes the subduction. When the steadily enlarging ocean floor meets a continental plate it slides under it. That's what subduction means.

Henry Hess discovered Sea Floor spreading that confirmed the plate tectonics theory of Alfred Wegener. Sea floor spreading is when convection pushes up magma at an edge of a plate. When this upward movement occurs, the plates (land masses) are pushed apart. On the other end of the plate, usually near a land mass, another plate, that is continental, the plate from the sea floor is being submerged back into the earth and melting into magma. The sea floor spreading helps to prove Wegener's theory that at one time all the land masses were one giant Pangea continent and through the plates breaking off and the sea floor spreading moving the plates apart, we have continental drift and the separate continents we have today. If you follow a line of islands, you can see what direction the plate is moving because they are made by a hot spot that a plate is moving across.
