Odysseus and his men then took the timber and heated the sharpened end in the fire until it glowed red. Then, with all their strength, they pushed the red-hot point into the eye of Polyphemus. The Cyclops howled and woke up flailing, but he was now blind.

Odysseus blinds Polyphemus by cleverly getting him drunk and then driving a stake into his eye while he sleeps. To escape, Odysseus and his men hide under Polyphemus's sheep as they are let out of the cave. Odysseus then reveals his true identity to Polyphemus, taunting him and revealing how he outsmarted him.

What does the Cyclops do that puts Odysseus and his men in danger?

I'd say the obvious thing is that Polyphemus trapped Odysseus and his men in his cave and threatened to eat them. Other than that Odysseus' cleverness protects them fromanything else Polyphemus tries to do. He was rash when he shouted out his real name to the cyclops though as Polyphemus' father is Poseidon and he calls upon him to avenge his blindness.

What herioic qualities does Odysseus reveal as he plots against the Cyclopes?

Odysseus demonstrates " Mind over Body" in his plot against the cyclopes . Knowing fully -well he could not use brute strength against the mighty cyclopes : specially Polyphemus, he out-smarted them all with a clever tactic upon Polyphemus first. To render Polyphemus unwary, Odysseus gave him a bowl of the strong, unwatered wine given them by Maron, the priest of Apollo. When Polyphemus asked for his name, Odysseus told him that it was "Noman". In appreciation for the wine, Polyphemus offered to return the favour by only eating him last. Once the giant fell asleep, Odysseus and his men turned an olive tree branch into a giant spear, something that they prepared while Polyphemus was out of the cave shepherding his flocks, and blinded him. Hearing Polyphemus's cries, other Cyclopes come to his cave to ask what was wrong. Polyphemus replied, ("Noman is killing me either by treachery or brute violence!") The other Cyclopes let him be, thinking that his outbursts must be either madness or the will of the gods. In the morning, Polyphemus rolled back the boulder to let the sheep out to graze. Now blind, he could not see the men, but he felt the tops of his sheep to make sure that the men were not riding them, and spread his arm at the entrance of the cave. Odysseus and his men escaped, however, by tying themselves to the undersides of three sheep each. Once out, they loaded the sheep aboard their ship and set sail.

What is the first lie that Odysseus tells the Cyclops?

The first lie that Odysseus tells the Cyclops is that his name is "Nobody." This deception plays a crucial role later when Odysseus blinds the Cyclops and tells him that "Nobody" is hurting him, fooling the other Cyclopes into thinking that nothing is wrong.

What mistake does Odysseus make after he defeats the Kyklopes?

Once he and his surviving men are back on board his ship and have gone a short distance from the island of the Cyclops, he foolishly lets Polyphemus know that Odysseus is name of the one who tricked and blinded him. In a rage Polyphemus calls upon his father Poseidon to prevent Odysseus from going home, and added that if he ever, after a long time, did get home, he would wretched and abandoned, and nothing would await him in his house but misery. And so it happened, though things did turn out alright in the end.

What lie did Odysseus tell the cyclopes?

1. When the Cyclops Polyphemus asks Odysseus where his ship is, Odysseus lies and says it was destroyed upon the rocks of the shore. 2. Odysseus told the cyclops that his name was "Nobody". When Odysseus and his men blind the cyclops (neither Odysseus nor the Cyclops dies), he yells to his friends for help. They ask him what is wrong and he answers saying, "Nobody's killing me now by fraud and not by force!" (Fagles' translation 9.455). They respond by saying that it must be the plague killing him and they can't help. They advise him to pray.

Why do Odysseus' men not get home?

All of Odysseus men die upon the journey home.
