Omitting this substance will not affect the appearance of hand lotion because it is a white or off white color. Since it is an alcohol compound if it is left out of the formula it will keep your hands from drying out as fast.

Stearic acid is mostly used to improve the appearance of creams. It forms fine crystals that refract the light, giving the lotion a pearly appearance. It is also a surfactant, like soap, so it would have a role in dissolving oils and fragrances into the lotion, as well as having a mild cleansing effect.

Hand lotion is affected by the triethanolamine emitted by skin as the triethanolamine can produce certain molecules on the skin that make the hand lotion less likely to be absorbed, rendering it useless.
