35 years of age, be born in the U.S., andlive in the U.S.
The President of the United States must be 35 years of age, and must have been born in the United States or its possessions and territories. There are no " job qualifications" for the Presidency, no required political experience, no necessary level of education, no test, no minimum standards of any kind. You don't even have to be a politician. Ike was a soldier, Reagan was an actor, Bush is a failed businessman (failed president, too!).

First, you can't really "sign up" to be president. The men and women who have run for this office have usually begun as local politicians in their home state. Most have had careers in law or business or education before entering politics. Barack Obama is one example: he got a law degree from Harvard, was a college professor as well as a lawyer, and then entered politics in Chicago in 1996, winning election to the Illinois state senate. Eventually, he moved up to the US Senate and then ran for president. Of course, anyone can run for any political office, assuming they have the right qualifications and get enough signatures to be on the ballot, so if you are interested in politics, find a local election you can enter, and start from there.

Your state's Secretary of State office will have the required paperwork, which may be different from state to state. In California, visit www.sos.ca.gov. Your state's web site address may be similar, but if you go to "www.<mystate>.gov", you should be able to find this information. Put in your two-letter state postal abbreviation in place of "<mystate>, of course.
