To tell if something is real sterling silver there can be a sterling stamp placed on the actual item, since it is illegal to place that stamp if it is not real. There is also an old trick, which may or may not be real, that claims if you rub it against hair, and it smells like metal it is not real.

What makes sterling silver tarnish?

exposure to substances which react with the surface of the metal, usually sulphur. Sterling silver is .925 (925%) pure silver. The other .75 is made up of an alloy consisting mainly of copper which oxidizes over time. When copper is exposed to oxygen, it darkens and eventually turns green. Sterling silver doesn't usually turn green but will turn almost black if not protected. Fine silver or .999 silver doesn't tarnish. Argentium silver is a new type of sterling silver that is tarnish-resistant. Only certain chemicals will tarnish Argentium but it will not tarnish from oxidation. Some metals that contain little to no silver are branded with names that make it seem like real silver. One of these metals is nickle silver, which doesn't contain any silver at all.

How much is sterling silver per gram?

About 86 cents. At the time of writing, one gram of pure silver is worth $0.93 and since sterling silver is 92.5% pure, you take 93 cents time .925 which gives you about 86 cents. The spot price of silver changes daily so what is current right now might not be current a day from now. [December 23, 2010]

Is FB Rogers Silver Co real silver or sterling?

Silver flatware is either sterling or silverplate over a base metal. Pure (.999) silver is too soft to use for eating utensils. Most FB Rogers products were quadruple silver plate over copper or another base metal, but a few of their patterns were sterling silver. The genuine sterling pieces carry one of the following pattern numbers: 118, 142, 144, 149, 164, 250, 400, 700 or 1636. These will also have the word "Sterling" stamped on the bottom of each piece. If it doesn't say "sterling," it is silver plate.

How do determine the price of sterling silver dishes.?

There are two answers to this question. 1. There is silver melt value to your piece; this number is determined by the ration of silver to inert base metals of the makeup. such as sterling silver is 925/1000 of silver. The weight of the piece times the market value for 925 silver will give you the melt value. Mind, no one is going to pay you full melt value. You can expect to be paid somewhere 50% o 70% of that number. 2. Then there is aesthetic value; this value is determined buy the manufacturer's hallmarks, condition, and public demand. This value is easily discovered by checking on line, find something similar in dimensions, manufacturer, silver content and weight. Or check with a local antique dealer or the manufacturer/reseller website.

Is a necklace marked 926 Italy worth anything?

Those marks mean that it's .925 (sterling) silver and was made in Italy. The intrinsic value of the silver would depend on weight, but can be less than the market value of the item. For example, a very old piece of silver jewelry from a historic period, or one designed by a famous dead artist, could have value to collectors. A valuation can be done by a qualified appraiser, and requires more information than just the alloy of silver used (the .925, aka sterling).
