If you are still short on time (congrats on the triplets!), any accountant can help you file all the paperwork for an extension. The Internal Revenue Service is an option if you have the time to wade through the paperwork with the form F4868: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4868.pdf

If you are due a refund it is not necessary to file for an extension to file your income tax return. An extension of time to file your income tax return is NOT an extension of time to pay any amount of income tax that would be due April 15 2010.

File for a Tax Extension?

Filing for a tax extension is a common way for those who need more time to prepare their return. For individual tax payers, tax returns are required to be filed or placed in the mail no later than 11:59 pm, April 15. However, for one reason or another, some taxpayers may not have their returns ready. They may not have all documents available, their tax preparer has not completed them or for another reason. The IRS has provided several means to obtain an extension to file the return. First, the taxpayer can file an Application For Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Tax Return, Form 4868. This form is a one page form that can be completed in minutes. After completing the personal information of the taxpayer, an estimate of the amount owed, the amount of payments previously made, balance due and the amount paid with the Application are filled in. No reason for the extension need be given. The Application can be filed via regular mail or electronically. Filing the Form 4868 provides the taxpayer an additional six months to file their return. If the taxpayer pays a portion of their tax obligation via credit card through an outside provider, an extension will be granted. If needed, the IRS has a number of online providers who will allow you to use their software and filing capabilities for free. You can usually file your extension electronically with one of these providers. Tax returns due on April 17, 2012 then become due on October 15, 2012. Filing for a tax extension does not provide an extension of time to pay the tax. If the taxpayer fails to pay the tax when due, interest and penalties will apply. Failure to pay penalties are generally .25 of 1% of the tax obligation, per month. Interest will accrue on the unpaid tax. However, a separate penalty for failing to file timely will usually not be incurred. The failure to file penalty is normally 5% of the unpaid tax, per month, up to 25% of the tax owed. This is separate for failure to pay penalties, and is more severe. In addition, criminal prosecution may result from failure to file. Though most taxpayers are encouraged to file timely, if at all possible. Filing for an extension, along with payment of the tax due, is the next best thing when it is not possible. It can save a taxpayer a great deal in interest and penalties.

You Still Have To File?

If you think that you may be late on getting your tax return in before the April deadline, file for an extension on taxes. It is easy to do and most of the time you will be granted an extension. However, you will need to get the tax papers in as soon as possible. A tax extension does not mean you have an extra year to finish your tax return. It only means that you have a short extension after April.
