This is a big topic and the answer very much depends on the context in which a sermon is to be preached. In one sense no-one can or should tell a preacher how to write a sermon since it must be from the heart of the preacher, or, more correctly,
directed by the Spirit of God according to the need of the hearers which God knows better than the preacher.

Having said that, some general rules are that a sermon should have a subject or a title, which is simple and easy to understand and under which all the main points are organized. This will not only aid the preacher in delivery but the hearers in remembering the message, or in following it. All the main points should relate directly to the main subject -these are general writing and public speaking pointers anyway.

Generally, the sermon also ought to have an aim in mind. Is it to instruct about a particular subject? Is aimed to lead to conviction in the hearers in terms of their personal standing with God? What action should they take as a result of the message if any? The answers to these will give the message direction to which all points ought eventually to lead.

In preparing a sermon reliance upon the direction of the Spirit of God is indispensable as is the discipline of study so that the message can have some detail and some substance. References from The Bible can be given also during the message so that hearers can follow along and see for themselves what is being asserted.

To prepare a sermon , you will have to choose a special reading as a topic, and based on it you will have to give your sermon. Make it short and interesting. A long sermon is not at all good
