Applications of solutions in industry, laboratory, medicine depends on the pH; each application need a specific pH.
When a substance has a low pH, it means that it is acidic. pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a substance is on a scale of 0 to 14, with lower numbers indicating higher acidity. So, a substance with a low pH has a high acidity level.
A pH meter determines acidity or alkalinity of a substance.
To perform a pH test at home, you can use pH test strips or a pH meter. Dip the test strip into the substance or place a few drops of the substance on the strip. Match the color of the strip to the provided chart to determine the pH level. With a pH meter, immerse the electrode into the substance and read the pH level displayed on the meter.

The substance with the highest pH is liquid ammonia, which has a pH of about 11.6.
The pH is the negative log of the concentration of hydronium ions. (pH=-log [H3O+]) If the pH is high, the substance is basic. If it is low the substance is acidic. When the pH is exactly 7 the substance is neutral.

Litmus paper is an easy and safe way to determine if a substance is a base. Alternatively, you could add an acid and see if it reacts. However, this has explosive potential, so I wouldn't really recommend it.
