In a nutshell: the chloroplasts convert light into ATP energy. There are specialized organelles called chloroplasts with a complex membrane system that allow the separation of charges to convert electromagnetic energy (photons) into electrochemical energy (proton gradient) and eventually into chemical energy in the form of ATP (phosphoryltransfer potential) and NADPH (reducing power) and ultimately as carbohydrates, fats and amino acids.
Chloroplasts use the light energy (from the sun) to convert simple inorganic molecules (e.g. water and carbon dioxide) into complex compounds, such as sugars.

Examples of these sugars and their uses are:

• Cellulose for the cell walls.
• Starch, the main type of storage carbohydrate.
• Sucrose, which is transported around the plant and sometimes stored in the fruits.
