How does physical landscape affect where people live in Japan?

Japan is one of the most industrialized societies in the world. This coupled with Japan's fairly large population, given its size, means that Japan is very densely populated. In cities, most people live inhigh-risesand large complexes. This density of population can easily lead to societal maladies ensuing from high population density, such as fast communication of disease, limited resources, competitive economics, pollution and sanitation problems, and unhealthy amounts of stress incorporated in the average citizen's everyday life.

About four-fifths of Japan is either hilly or mountainous. It is difficult for people to live in these areas, for the relief is so high. it is difficult to grow crops and build on these terrains. This would explain why less people live in central Honshu. One of Japan's islands, Hokkaido, is nearly inhabited because of the Landscape.
