I have never noticed my poodles 'prepare' for winter. In the summer I give them pretty short hair cuts so in the fall I let the hair grow out so they won't get cold outside. With a longer coat it is important to brush it so it doesn't get matted.
Since they do not shed there is no addition of fur or cessation of shedding.
They prepare for the winter Olympics by non stop training
