Rabbits are mammals, which means they feed their babies with milk. Rabbits have nipples and the kits (baby rabbits) suck on their mother's nipples to get milk. They do this by the mother rabbit either laying on her side to suckle the kittens, or she will push the kits underneath her and let them suckle that way.

For the first few week of their lives this will be all the food that the kits have to sustain them. After a few weeks they will start becoming independant and will begin to wean, which means that they start sampling the foods they see the adults eating (which differs somewhat between wild and domestic rabbits. See related links and related questions below for more info.)

The kits will continue to get some of their mother's milk until they are fully weened at about 10 or 11 weeks.

About Wild Rabbits A mother comes and feeds her kits only twice a day: once at dusk and once at dawn. Once they're about 3 weeks, old they start to venture outside their den, but staying very close, and they will pick at flowers and grass and any veggies that happen to be close by.

A mother rabbit will pull out lots of soft, warm hair and put it in the place when she intends to have her kits. After the babies are born, she will hop in the nest box or whatever it is and feed them twice a day - dawn and dusk. She hops in the box and the babies come running. When they have had their fill. she leaves. Rabbits are very hands-off parents, really only doing even this little bit until the babies are 6 weeks old. The kits will open their eyes at 7 days old and they will be walking around and eating solid food around 14 days old.

A rabbit feeds its young by rolling on its side so the kittens can reach her nipples to suck the milk out of them.
