Generally common interests create social relationships, and obviously people who are of the same faith have something in common, so therefore yes, to some degree relationships can create or aid social relationships.
I know, that while I was growing up, I could have laid hands on any illegal drug I could have wanted. I could have reveled in sexual promiscuity, both heterosexual or homosexual. I could have gambled, drank alcohol. I saw lieing, cheating, stealing all around me. And, all of this happened within the walls of my own school, surrounded by "Christians."
Not all were doing these things, but a fair number were. Of those who graduated (from a class of 64), about half are now divorced. Many of those and a few others had affairs. Seven served time in prison (more than 10%). Still others have been convicted of numerous misdemeanors. One is a local television personality who is so wrapped up in her "celebrity" status that if she is approached by any of those we graduated with and referred to by her actual name, she flies off into a rage (did it once on camera and within a month she was working at a different station).

So, by my observation, religion affects society in one great way. It brings out the great pointing finger, and it speaks with the booming voice of condemnation, "I'm not as bad as that guy!" Truth be told, those who point and drag around red herringsare typically worse than those being highlighted. If religion would focus on its intended target, the individual, society would benefit greatly. Until the time that all religion and all people who profess religion do focus on the individual, society will continue to be affected in negative ways.
Oh! Keep in mind that when Christ walked the Earth, he did not associate with religious leaders, the holy men of his day (Actually he often got into disputes with them). Those with whom he associated were the prostitutes, tax collectors, foul mouthed sailors, and other dregs of society. Perhaps if you want truth, you should look at the bottom of the pile.
