Dissolving salts in water increases the density slightly. Ocean waters have an average density about 2.5% greater than fresh water. The Dead Sea has a much higher density, somewhere roughly near 20% greater than fresh water due to its 30% salinity level.

Less dense water floats on top of more dense water. Given two layers of water with the same salinity, the warmer water will float on top of the colder water. There is one catch though! Temperature has a greater effect on the density of water than salinity does.

Ocean water gets more dense as temperature goes down. ... Increasing salinity also increases the density of sea water. Less dense water floats on top of more dense water. Given two layers of water with the same salinity, the warmer water will float on top of the colder water

Density is calculated from the temperature and salinity of the water.

How does the temperature affect the formation of deep currents?

Deep currents form where the density of ocean water increase so, water density depends on temperature and salinity. I hope I helped you =)

What is the density of the ocean water depend on?

Mostly salinity and temperature

What are the four things that affect ocean's salinity?

Salinity is affected by temperature of the water, amount of salt per area, how cool it is, and the amount of water per area. If it's hot, the water will evaporate leaving more salt behind. The more salt you add, of course you will have a higher salinity. If it is cold, ice forms and pushes out the salt into the water below. And if you add more water, there will be more water to hold the salt, thus lowering the salinity.

What can causes a increase in the density of the ocean water?

the amount of salinity in the water and high temperatures

How does water temperature affect water salinity?

The temperature and salinity of seawater determine its density. Water gets denser as it gets saltier and reaches a maximum density at 4 °C. Salinity does affect the boiling point and freezing point of water, but not its temperature.
