Statins are lipid lowering agents specifically a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that , inhibits the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis by competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase therefore lowering the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver since cholesterol is a major determinant in atherosclerosis.
