I wish that I could remember the reference to this article that I read. I used to work as an X-Ray technologist in an orthopedic doctor's office. The doctor brought in an article one day that we left out for patients to read. It said that broken bones of smokers took about double the amount of time to heal than non-smokers. Based on this, I would say that the answer to this question is yes, smoking does damage the skeletal system. It makes them weaker. Hope this helps.
