Snakes swallow their food whole - Take as an example a corn snake swallowing a mouse...
The snake finds the mouse's head, opens it's mouth and grabs the mouse's nose. It pushes forward, stretching its jaws as it goes, until the head of the mouse is in the snakes mouth. Once the mouse's head is in the snakes throat, it's muscles grip the mouse preventing it from sliding backwards, while the snake 'walks' its jaws forward over the mouse's body. This process is repeated until the whole mouse is in the snakes throat, then muscles contract and push the mouse down to the snakes stomach.
It all depends whether their natural food is available. If their 'normal' food (other snakes) is scarce - they will take food such as birds, rodents and lizards as an alternative.
Snakes will usually take live prey - that's simply theirnatural way of obtaining food. We herpetologists 'coax' and 'condition' them to take dead food - as it's more convenient for us.
No, and they don't have gills , either . They drink it or get it from their food.
Most snakes feed on small mammals, birds, amphibians, other snakes, etc. Some of the larger snakes will take small deer, small to medium size pigs, and other small to medium size animals.
While a snakes natural diet is live food that it has killed itself - it's more convenient for a snake owner if the snake will take frozen-thawed food.

Snakes, birds and cats are some of the best pets to take care of. Snakes require very little upkeep and they eat once a week, depending on the size of the food. Birds are rather self sufficient such as cats.
A boa constrictor shouldn't bite its own tail, some snakes such as king snakes are very aggressive with food and eat other snakes might take a chomp at their tail but unless a rare case it wont be a boa.

Nothing ! Their natural diet is always live food - they would never eat carrion in the wild. Snakes usually eat rodents of one form or another. In captivity, they can be 'conditioned' to accept thawed-out frozen food, but they will always take live food if it is offered.
Snakes do not care for their young.
