Sonar works by sending a pulse of ultrasound through water. It then listens and detects the pulse if it reflects back from a surface. The time is measured (electronically) between sending the pulse and hearing the retured echo. Knowing the speed at which sound travels through water, it can be calculated how far the returned echo has travelled and hence distance of the object.

Sonar sends out pulses of sound. The time taken for them to bounce back is measured and the distance calculated from that.

A sonar system measrues distance by determining the?

time it takes for sound waves to bounce off a surface

How can we measure the depth of sea by using SONAR?

Simply by measuring the time it takes for the sonar 'ping' to return to the device that sent it. The speed of sound is constant - and dividing the time by the speed of sound gives the distance !

What scientific instrument can be used to measure the length and width?

ruler, caliper, tape measure. In today's high tech world, there are also laser/sonar devices too. The laser beam is pointed to a hard surface and then the sonar sends and receives a signal - based upon the time interval, the exact distance is computed.
