They divide different climate regions of Asia.
Air masses affect climate in the same way mountains or mountain barriers do.
Mountains can affect climate is that sometimes mountains can affect the movement of air.
The mountains of Europe are also known as a barrier, or obstacle. The early settlers of Europe could not get past the mountains, so they just made their settlements there. I would think that they cause a considerable climate change, too.
If there are mountains blocking an area, then the area will be warmer. If you are by a body of water, than the air will be colder. There are many more ways landforms can effect climate, and these are just a few examples.
Climate is dramatically effected by landforms. Elevation and latitude effect temperature. Mountains trap rainfall on one side, creating deserts and rainforests. As such, the study of geography and climate go hand in hand.
