As humanity matured through many civilizations, Baha'is believe that God manifested the Holy Spirit in many Messengers (ie., Krishna, Moses, etc.) to give Divine guidance. With each appearance of one of God's anointed Messengers, we became ready to learn deeper spiritual truths and practice greater levels of extending ourselves to our fellow man. Baha'is believe that mankind is now ready to recognize and accept some of the Faith's basic tenets toward the goal of the promised eventual world unity: the oneness of humanity, the equality of women and men, the harmony of science and religion, the elimination of prejudices, mandatory education, spiritual solutions to economic extremes, a secondary universal language, and others. Teachings of the Baha'i Faith connect the personal with the global and the practical with the spiritual, providing ways of living with one another in unity.

He was imprisoned and banished and exiled, until he was eventually sent to Akka in the north of Israel. There's a good wikipedia page on the Bahai Faith.
