Many trains around the world today are equipped with fail-safe computerized systems that provide safe train operation, with one function included that is referred to as Automatic Train Operation (ATO). This ATO provides all the functions that would normally be performed by the train operator, except for watching the track in front of the train.

Because there is no one to observe if someone may be on the track, the Dubai Metro is equipped with doors on the station platforms that only open when the train is in the station to prevent people from entering the track area.
