How does the Federal Reserve System help maintain a competitive private enterprise economic system?

The short answer is no, the Federal Reserve System does not help maintain a competitive private enterprise economic system. The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the United States of America and exists solely for the purpose of benefiting bankers. The Federal Reserve is a consortium of twelve private banks which are not part of the United States Government. These private banks purchase paper notes from the U.S. mint for printing cost or simply enter digital money into their computer then lend back the money plus interest to the people through member banks. The profits go into the share holders of the bank's pocket's, the U.S. public receives no benefit. Every American should learn more about the Federal Reserve.

How does government intervene to lower inflation or unemployment?

The government acts on inflation through The Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve acts on inflation by targeting interest rates through the reserve requirement. When interest rates are high, people want to keep money in their bank accounts, and inflation decreases. When interest rates are low, people are more willing to spend their money and inflation increases. Once, the Federal Reserve actually pushed the United States into a recession once to battle especially high inflation. Ever since then, it has been very important for the Federal Reserve to keep inflation in check. The government, as demonstrated during the latest recession, enacts many different stimulus packages to help the economy recover and help unemployment come down from extremely high percentages.

What happens to reserves and monetary base if the Fed buy bonds from a bank?

If the Federal reserve wants to create dollars it buys bonds from the public in the nations bond market. After the purchase the money spent is in the fists of the public. So basically the purchase of bonds by the Fed creates money, thus increasing the money supply. If the Fed sells government bonds the money then is out of the hands of the public thus decreasing the money supply. Reserves are unaffected because managing the minimum reserve for banks is a different tool that the Federal Reserve and the Federal Open Market Committee use to help manipulate the money supply and the value of that supply of money. It is called fractional reserve banking. For more information I would recommend checking out the FOMC website, Central Bank website, and Federal reserve website.

Due to the closing of Mexican financial markets on March 24, 1996, there was a fear of a spill over that would disrupt markets when the Mexican exchanges reopened. To solidify the Central Bank of Mexico, The Federal Reserve Bank of NY established a $6 Billion agreement with Mexico. This would be drawn down in the event of a fiscal crisis. No drawings were necessary however, as the USA, Mexico and Canada created a joint financial enterprise to handle the problem.
