Asteroids can cause mass extinctions because it can cause global cooling and/or global warming. The impact can send enough dust and other material into the atmosphere that can cause sunlight to be darkened.

Climate is one of those things that has many things affecting it all at once to make it run smoothly. An asteroid impact will disrupt some of these things (and the larger the asteroid, the more things it will affect and the bigger these changes will be). First, if the asteroid is big enough to cause an extinction-level-event (E.L.E.), any changes to the climate will be moot from our point of view. That being said, an impact on land could throw up so much debris into the atmosphere that it blocks the sun. When the sun is blocked, it affects both the sunlight and heat reaching the surface (on land and sea). The lack of this heat will begin affecting climate patterns in the ocean and on land. The lack of sunlight will start a massive die-off of living things dependent upon sunlight (i.e. plants) which will also drastically affect other life on the planet. An ocean impact is better in many ways for climate and things like that but still can be just as devastating for the life on our planet.

They don't, unless they impact. Then if they are large enough they could throw up enough dust to block sunlight over most of the planet causing global cooling and winter like conditions worldwide.

A large enough asteroid could (theoretically) knock the Earth off of it's axis and closer or further away from the sun.

Unless the asteroid is huge it would have no effect on the climate or weather.
