The largest river flowing thru the Midwest is the Mississippi. This river begins in Minnesota and flows all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Most other rivers dump into this mighty river. This river forms the Eastern border of states like Iowa, and Missouri and others. There is also the Missouri river. This is a large river was used by Native Americans, fur traders and Lewis and Clark for exploration. This river forms the Western border of Iowa and flows through Missouri to the Mississippi. In Iowa there are many rivers. The Des Moines river is one of the largest rivers. In Nebraska, the Platte river branches into many areas before joining into one large river. There are many other rivers in the Midwest. These are just a few.
The Missouri River is longer than the Mississippi, into which it flows after crossing much of the Great Plains. Unfortunately, it is not as navigable for much of its length. Its tributaries begin in northern Wyoming and southern Montana. The Missouri itself touches 7 states, beginning near Three Forks in Montana, bisecting North and South Dakota, and forming the boundary between Nebraska and Iowa, and between Kansas and Missouri. It crosses Missouri west to east and joins the Mississippi River north of St Louis, on the west bank opposite Hartford, Illinois.
