This obsolete airplane was replaced by the A6M Zero in 1941. The Zero was a model "0" which entered service in 1940. Midway & Coral Sea took place in 1942! Some A5M's were no doubt still around performing reconnaissance missions...as they were still good flying machines. The A5M had been around since Japan was fighting China in 1935. If the A5 was still around during Coral Sea or Midway, few if anybody were aware of it.
