∙ 7y agoEach colour has a different meaning. Red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for art and purple for the human sprit. It was designed by Gilbert Baker, and was supposed to also have indigo; to represent harmony, and pink; to represent sex. However they were dropped as pink was hard to get on the market, and the artist didn't like the odd number of colours, so he dropped indigo as well.

∙ 7y agoThe rainbow flag first originated in 1977/8, when activist, Harvey Milk challenged artist Gilbert Baker to design a symbol that represented the LGBT community. He came up with the rainbow design and the flag was first flown at the 1978 Gay Freedom Day Parade.
One theory is that it was inspired by the song Over The Rainbow, sung by Judy Garland, a huge gay icon. The colours have evolved over the years and each one has a significance:
Hot pink - Sexuality
Red - Life
Orange - Healing
Yellow - Sunlight
Green - Nature
Turquoise - Magic
Indigo/blue - Serenity/harmony
Violet - Spirit

∙ 7y agoIn 1978 Gilbert Baker combined 8 colors together: pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for the human spirit. He soon realized that hot pink was not as available and dropped indigo as well to maintain an equal amount of colors.
