GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time - derived from when the British were the power in the Oceans; but also important for standardising time within the British Isles for services like the railways.

ADDED: It is set as noon and midnight on the 0º longitude meridian, passing through the London borough of Greenwich. It is still used as the standard time for many applications, though supplanted by Universal Co-ordinated Time (UTC), which corrects for a tiny error due to continental-drift moving the GMT line slightly away from the astronomical position over the years since its International Adoption!
