Semilunar valves include the aortic and pulmonary valves of the Heart. These valves do not have chordae tendineae, and are more similar to the valves in veins. Tricuspid vales are composed to three cusps which are attached with papillary muscles with the help of chordae tendineae.

Semilunar valves are located at the begining of pulmonary artery and aorta. They close in diastole due to the back pressure of the blood in the corresponding arteries, once the systolic ejection force from the ventricle stops.

AV valves separate the atria and ventricles. They close in systole with the force generated by in the blood of the ventricle due to contraction of the ventricle. Since the force is high, the valves can be flung back into the atria. This is prevented by the chordae tendinae attached to the valves, which are held down by the papillary muscle contraction. The function of AV valves is an active process involving the papillary muscles while that of semilunar valves is a passive process. When the papillary muscles dysfunction, the AV valves leak, even though there may be no structural abnormality of the AV valves.

The av valves control flow from the atria to the ventricles, the semilunar valves control flow out of the heart. Also, the av valves have chordae tendineae and the semilunars do not.
