During the photosynthesis process plants absorb Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and emit Oxygen (O2), thus they increase the Earth's oxygen levels and trap carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is released when the plant dies and decays or it is burnt.

To start with oxygen helps animals obviously because they breathe it in and out, co2 helps plants because basically they need it to breathe they take it in and helps them create photosynthesis
