How many troops in a confederate regiment?

On paper, an infantry regiment consisted of 10 Companies with 100 men in each for a total of 1000 men. This was a typical size of Union regiments when they were first formed and mustered into service. The Confederate regiments were not quite that size. Many didn't get to be that size as they were rushed into service. After the regiment went off to war, they began to lose men in combat. The regiment was trimmed down even smaller. It was common for a Confederate infantry company to be 40 men. It was common for Confederate regiments to be as small as 250 men during the last 2 years of the war. When the regiment experienced high loss of soldiers and officers, the regiment would be merged or "consolidated" with another regiment. Sometimes it was difficult to know this as they continued to be organized along their old regiment. Thus the 29th Mississippi Regiment and the 30th Mississippi Regiment in General Walthall's Brigade were merged into the 29th/30th Mississippi Regiment soon after the Battle of Missionary Ridge.

Did the 164th infantry regiment receive the combat infantrymans badge as a whole during their time in the pacific theater in World War 2?

Answer Custermen is correct that the 164th as a whole regiment would not have received the Comabt Infantry Badge. I have done extensive research of the 164th (my Grandfather was a member of Co "I" 164th Inf. Reg) it seems like many or most of them did end up receiving the CAB. This was probably due to their months of training (a little over 9 for original members) at Camp Claiborne, La and the combat situations they were in on Guadalcanal and other battles. They were part of the Americal (a combination of America(n) and New Caledonia- where they were formed) Division and they were the only division in WWII that did not have a number in their Division name. The Combat Infantrymans Badge was an individual award given to infantrymen(according to their training classification) who had been in combat. That meant that everyone in the Regiment would not receive the CIB because some were not rated as infantrymen OR they were not in actual combat. (Reference AR 600-8-22, Para 8-6). The CIB was authorized in 1943. The requirements are very different from the newer Combat Action Badge (CAB) that was created in 1991. The 164th Infantry Regiment was part of the "Americal" Infantry Division that served in the Pacific Theater. "Ameri-" was derived from the American Troops forming the Division, and "cal" from New Caledonia where it was organized. It was the only non-numbered division in US Army history. It was inactivated in 1945, then reactivated by the Regular Army in 1954 as Hqs, 23rd Division; redesignated HHC, 23rd Division for Vietnam; and was inactivated in 1971 at Ft. Lewis, WA. Why was the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry so important to the history of the US Civil War?

1- They were an all-Black regiment. There were other black regiments organized from ex-slaves as the Union army moved through the Southern States. This unit was raised within Massachusetts from free men and some ex-slaves who had escaped the South.2- This black regiment distinguished itself in battle. Many black soldiers did not see combat and some did not perform well in combat. The 54th Mass had at least one man earn the Medal of Honor.3- It had a movie made about it: called "Glory". Several books have been published about it and the memoirs of its commander.4- Not all of the regiment was killed in the battle of Fort Wagner, as the movie implies.

Spain has historically held a negative attitude towards the Protestant Reformation. During the 16th century, Spain was under strict Catholic rule and actively sought to suppress Protestant ideas. The Spanish Inquisition was established to combat heresy, leading to the persecution and expulsion of Protestants from the country. Today, though Spain is more religiously diverse, Catholicism remains the dominant religion and the attitude toward the Reformation continues to be one of skepticism and resistance.
