The 54th Massachusetts was the first African American regiment that was recruited in the North. They first saw combat duty at the Battle of Fort Wagner. The regiment was led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. He was the son of a wealthy Northern abolitionist.
The first African regiment that was recruited in the North was called the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.
54th regiment
African Americans helped the Union a great deal. Its most important contribution was joining the Union army. As many as 150,000 Black troops fought for the Union in the war.
I'm not sure if you can say they had a purpose. People wanted to give the blacks an opportunity to fight for their country and their freedom from slavery. The Union wanted to use the blacks to fight the war as there was a shortage of men who were joining. The Confederates hated this because most of the blacks who fought were slaves that had ran away. They feared the ex-slaves would attack their families.
Germany and the Soviet Union
For both the Confederate and Union army combined 3.5-4 million people fought in the Civil War, almost all of them were Americans (some slaves, Africans). About 2.1 million fought on the Union Army, whilst about 1.5 million fought in the Confederate army.
My 5x great grandfather was the leader of that regiment, Santos Benavides. He was the captain of the 33rd Texas Cavalry, also called Benavides' Regiment, until he was promoted to colonel in November 1863. On March 19, 1864, he defended Laredo against the Union's First Texas Cavalry, whose commander was Colonel Edmund J. Davis.

It was mainly made up of free slaves, it was led by Robert Shaw. They were most famous on their attack of fort wagner.
The 54th regiment was the first all black regiment to fight in the Civil War. It was authorized in March 1863, and was commanded by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. When the 54th fought to try and capture a fort over half of them were killed, including their own Colonel Shaw. However, because of the 54th, black men became a larger part of the Union Army, and were awarded for their courage and bravery.
Because union fought to free slaves.
