The Barn Owl swallows its prey whole in most cases. Later it will regurgitate an owl pellet consisting of the bones and fur of its prey. If the owl is feeding chicks it will tear the prey into pieces. It might also eat prey in pieces if it is too big to swallow, however, barn owls have a very large mouth, which is not readily seen when you look at them because the part you can see, the bill, looks small.
If any creature, let alone a barn owl doesn't' eat they will die. We need food to live.
When the barn owls eat a rodent they spit out the bones and fur so the moths eat the owl pellets from the barn owls
