Best Answer

A bicycle chain consists of two parallell lines of oblong parts, called inner and outer plates. At each end of each plate there's a hole. One pair of inner plates and one pair of outer plates are stacked so that they overlap at one end, and a rivet is driven through the stack.

The rivet is a snug fit to the outer plates, but a loose fit to the inner plate. This allows the chain to move, in one direction, with the rivet acting as a hinge. Then you add another set and repeat the process.

What is a chain tensioner?

Can be two different things. Chain tensioners for bikes with horizontal dropouts are small gadgets that hook over the rear axle and pulls it towards the rear to help keep the chain tensioned. Chain tensioners for bikes with vertical dropouts are like a small spur wheel usually in the position where a rear derailer would have been. These push the chain downwards to keep an even tension on it.
