The body works very hard to maintain stable conditions, which is called homeostasis. To raise the core temperature of the body, chemicals will be released from neuroendocrine glands to minimize blood flow to the extremities and skin and maximize blood flow to the core organs (brain, heart, lungs). If the body is noticeably cold, these chemicals will also signal to large muscle groups (quadriceps, hamstrings, abdominal and back muscles) to contract and relax rapidly - this generates heat and results in you shivering.

To lower the core temperature of the body, the chemicals released will maximize blood flow to the skin and extremities and cause the apocrine glands of the skin (sweat glands) to secrete sweat to help cool the body.
