Equipment, people, seed fall, wildlife, and wind are ways that weeds spread. Equipment can be considered a source of seed-spreading since seeds can get caught on vehicle parts in one place and fall elsewhere. Seeds may catch on people passing by or they may be dispersed by natural seed fall, wildlife consuming food and eliminating seeds, and wind gusts.

Seed dispersal is the way in which carnation weed spreads.

Specifically, the plant in question (Eurphorbia terracina) quickly becomes a shrub-like herb that forms into dense thickets. Each of its mature fruits contains three seeds whose coverage area in the immediate landscape is guaranteed by its explosive ejection. Seed dispersal beyond the plant's immediate vicinity is facilitated by ants.

A weed is just a plant growing where we do not want it to, so any method by which plants spread will answer the question. Some simple examples are:

  1. Couch grass sends out invasive roots which sprout new clumps.
  2. Dandelions produce airborne fruits which disperse in the wind.
  3. People can transport weed seeds or fruits, for instance stuck to their clothes as cleavers do.

Why should plants or weeds be killed?

Danger and detriment are reasons why plants and weeds sometimes need to be eliminated. For example, plants and weeds may attract harmful bacteria, fungi and viruses. Or they may grow in ways which are unfriendly to faunal, floral, and human sharing of nearby space.

Can you put weeds in a compost bin?

No, diseased, live and treated weeds should not go in a compost bin even though yes, dead weeds can. Weeds that suffer from disease or treatment with herbicides or that still support living parts do not belong in the bin since infections may spread, synthetic materials may pollute compostable materials and viable plants may self-propagate. Dead weeds contrastingly will be compostable if previously "fried" atop exposed metal or within dark, sealed plastic bags.

How can you kill weeds without killing saplings right next to weeds?

Manual or mechanical removal and non-residual, target-specific herbicide treatments are ways to kill weeds without killing nearby saplings. Removal by hand and by hoe targets the weeds, not the saplings. Weeds that are not growing among the saplings may offer sufficient space for the fatal stress of extreme cutbacks, landscape fabrics, mulches, and soil-solarizing weighted-down black plastic sheeting.

By what means of reproduction do weeds spread?

Accidentally, intentionally, and vicariously are ways in which people can spread seeds. Accidents happen when clothing and footwear catch seeds as people ambulate through home- and land-scapes whereas intent and third-partying will be involved when people respectively cultivate plants and encourage fruit-eating, seed-dispersing wildlife.

What is better to spread over fresh grass seed- straw or hay?
