The Caste System was abolished for a reason. Of course, the higher castes, the Brahmin, were treated well, but the serfs, laborers, and "Untouchables" (people who did the dirty jobs) were treated horribly. The only way you could change castes was by marriage or, actually, death. The people believed in reincarnation and thought that if you lived your life well, you could be reincarnated into a higher caste.
Hope this helps!
