The original Constitution is behind bulletproof glass, framed with titanium to keep the glass in place. It has argon gas on the inside of the glass, each page in a different glass container. The temperature on the inside is 68 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity of 40%. It can be dropped down into a bomb proof shelter in minutes if under threat, and is protected by military and government personnel.
The constitution protects the states by the rarely invoked Tenth Amendment which states
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
In practice this amendment is widely circumvented via either a broad view of the interstate commerce clause or outright ignoring it.
The actual original copy is behind bullet proof glass, in nitrogren and can be dropped into a bomb proof vault in a matter of a few minutes in the National Archives. All military and government personnel take an oath to protect it against all enemies, foreign and domestic. The checks and balances within the document, providing for three branches of government, protect any one branch from taking control.
All US citizens are protected by the constitution, just as the constitution of a state protects all the citizens of the state.
The constitution protects the citizens of the United States in several ways. Some examples include; the protection against cruel and unusual punishment, and freedom of speech.
The people who take care of it use gases and chemicals, such as humidified helium. And the casing that it is in has glass that keeps light out, because light makes the document crack.

The Constitution limits the power of government and protects the rights of the people.
The preamble has nothing to do with individual rights. It only states the purpose of the constitution. It is the Bill of Rights that protects individual rights.
The Constitution does. The government makes laws and enforces them but the constitution actually protects individual's rights. The US is a constitutional federated republic. The government is kept in check by the constitution. Without the checks and balances that the constitution provides, the government could take away all rights of the people, controlling all they say and do. A government without checks and balances usually ends in dictatorship.
