The cotton gin could do the work of many people, so fewer people were needed to take the seeds out of the cotton. However, the cotton gin made this job much quicker and so farmers/plantation owners wanted the slaves to work harder and longer at picking cotton in the fields. Additionally, more slaves were needed. After the invention of the Cotton Gin, the number of slaves in the U.S. south grew from about 1 million to 2 and continued to grow.

the cotton gin was made to process cotton quicker and more efficient. that means that more labor was needed to run the gins and made the demand for slaves higher so that more cotton could be produced this was a reason that led to the civil war.

The cotton 'gin (i.e. cotton engine) was simple and inexpensive for anyone that wanted one to produce and put into use. It so greatly simplified the previously highly labor intensive process of removing the seeds from raw cotton to prepare it for sale that it made the previously marginal slave based plantation farming economy of the southern states highly profitable, dramatically increasing demand for slaves to plant and pick cotton.

Had it not been invented there has been some speculation that the slave based economy of the southern states would have become so unprofitable that it might have disintegrated on its own, freeing many of the now unneeded slaves, and avoiding the Civil War.
