There were competing devices like the pay-communications- and restricted Visigraph. Visigraphs were accessed in special sound-proof booths . I don"t know how they handled the financial charges, but it was expensive. Visigraphs were used by Phil Spector to communicate with the Ronettes. Phil always donned shades when he went on the Visigraph.
